Antarctic oases: These dirt-filled holes provide microbial life a source of liquid water on an otherwise frozen continent. This week, researchers are gathered in Tromsø to kick off BioIce, a project that will study conditions for life in these holes and the makeup of communities in them. In many areas around the edges of Antarctica, strong, dry winds from the interior plateau sublimate (evaporate) all of the snow that falls, exposing blue glacier ice that can be thousands of years old. Windblown sand and other particles collect on these blue ice areas. Where enough is gathered, it is warmed by the summer sun and begins to melt the ice, creating a puddle that gathers more particles. The melting organizes the debris, called cryoconite, into circular holes that grow deeper. Cryoconite holes are a big logistical challenge to operating the airfield at Troll Station, where they have to be dug out and filled in to keep a hard, smooth surface for planes. Inspired by discussions about them with the logistics team, biologists and glaciologists from @unisvalbard, NPI, @aberystwyth.university and @northumbriauni will measure conditions in the holes on the undisturbed blue ice near Troll and sample the communities living in them. This way to the bathroom! Weather conditions can change very fast in polar areas and the storms can last for many days. This is a particular challenge if you are based in a tent camp when doing the research. It is not uncommon that the visibility is so limited that one cannot trust to find the way between the different tents in the camp. Therefore, a simple rope connecting the vital toilet tent to the sleeping tents is crucial to arrange before the bad weather appears. The picture shows one such occasion on top of the ice field Lomonosovfonna in Svalbard when the storm lasted for several days. Holding on to that rope made it a lot safer going to the bathroom. Can you tell where these photos are taken? Every year Scientists from the Norwegian Polar Institute and @geohyd_unioslo conduct mass balance assessment and satellite altimetry calibration fieldwork on the Austfonna ice cap in Svalbard. The route from our depot on to the ice takes us through the moraine of the glacier Etonbreen. Here, several metre high banks and spires of rocks and sediments protrude from the snow. On the other side of the world, sufficiently tall mountains emerge from the Antarctic ice sheet, forming nunataks. Two hundred kilometres from the Norwegian overwintering station Troll in Dronning Maud Land, the distinctive Ulvetanna (the wolf’s tooth) rises 1700 m above the surrounding ice.
