As glaciers flow they shape the landscape beneath them, forming pyramidal peaks, cirques, U-shaped valleys and fjords. The material they erode through abrasion and plucking is carried along by the glacier and deposited as moraines. Lateral moraines form along the sides of a glacier, parallel to valley walls. At the confluence of two tributary glaciers, the lateral moraines merge to form a medial moraine. Medial moraines demonstrate the relative ice flux from different tributaries to the composite glacier. They can also be used to infer past surges. If one tributary surges, its ice flux into the composite glacier will temporarily increase, which manifests as displaced and ‘looped’ medial moraines. Material transported by a glacier will ultimately reach the snout, where it will be deposited as a terminal moraine. When the glacier terminus position is stable, a large volume of material can accumulate. Periods of stability during terminus retreat may result in the deposition of recessional moraines parallel to the terminal moraine. Terminal and lateral moraines mark out the maximum glacier extent, allowing a quantification of retreat. These moraines may also act as a dam behind which glacial lakes can form. Lakes dammed by moraine or ice may be unstable, and outburst floods are a concern for communities downstream in glacierised mountain ranges such as the Himalaya and Andes. Our travel destinations do not always end up being the polar regions. This week, many NPI scientists join one of the largest Earth science conferences, General Assembly of European Geosciences Union 2019 in Vienna. Together with numerous Earth scientists all over the world, we present ongoing research, develop professional networks, and discuss future project opportunities all day long. Katrin Lindback presented radar measurements of basal melting at Nivlisen Ice Shelf (#MADICEproject) and Brice Van Liefferinge presented radar investigations of basal conditions in the Dome Fuji region, both in Antarctica. A 30-hour sunset. We’re sometimes lucky to have our work take us to interesting places. NPI researcher Stephen Hudson got the chance to spend a winter at the South Pole just after beginning his graduate studies in atmospheric science. At the poles, the sun circles overhead each day, staying at nearly the same elevation all day. It changes elevation only due to Earth’s tilt and orbit around the sun. The result is that the entire year is “one day,” with midnight in late June, sunrise in late September, noon in late December, and sunset in late March. Geometrically, it takes 30 hours from the time the bottom of the sun touches the horizon until the top of the sun drops below it. In practice, the dense layer of cold air near the surface refracts the light, and variations in that refraction cause the sun to appear and disappear over several days around the equinoxes. The photos were taken at 2 AM and 11 PM on 23 March and at 3 AM on 24 March 2001. The brightness differences are mostly due to different exposures, but the sun is on the horizon in all three. We were lucky to have nice weather for the sunset week; these days were mostly clear with light winds and temperature around −65°C, perfect weather for getting a last look at the sun for six months. Name: Rob Graham Where are you from? Stirling, Scotland When did you move to Tromsø? May 2016, although I began working for the Norwegian Polar Institute in May 2015. What do you work with? Arctic sea-ice What was you dream job when you were a kid? I used to want to build houses… so not quite sure how I ended up becoming a scientist! What’s the best thing about being a scientist? Where to begin! Always learning new things. I have been able to live all over the world, and travel to some amazingly beautiful places on field work and for conferences. And of course meeting lots of great people. What did you study? I studied meteorology. After giving up on my dream of building house, I decided I wanted to become a weatherman. What’s your funniest or worst field work moment? Being taught how to launch a radiosonde (a giant helium filled weather balloon) on a ship covered with really sharp edges, during a storm with 70 km/h winds… needless to say I discovered this was a lot easier than I had initially thought a few days later after the storm had passed. What’s your favorite polar animal? Penguins. What’s your favorite field work food? All of it! My only fieldwork has taken place on a ship, where we have a dedicated chef to cook us breakfast, lunch, cake and dinner every day. Returning to the real world and remembering how to cook is tough.
